Focus Area: Veterans’ Empowerment & Disaster Response
Jake Wood is co-founder and CEO of Team Rubicon, a nonprofit that utilizes the skills of military veterans to deploy disaster response teams. Under Jake’s leadership, Team Rubicon has responded to more than 140 disasters since the 2010 Haiti earthquake and grown from eight to 40,000 members. Jake is a leading veterans’ advocate who has briefed President Obama on veterans’ issues, discussed disaster response with former Presidents Bush and Clinton, and testified before the Senate. As a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, Jake deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as a Scout Sniper and earned the Navy-Marine Commendation Medal.
Team Rubicon unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams. Through continued service, Team Rubicon seeks to provide veterans with three things they lose after leaving the military: purpose, gained through disaster relief work; community, built by serving with others; and identity, created by joining a new mission. Coupled with leadership development and other opportunities, Team Rubicon looks to help veterans transition from military to civilian life.
